So, the TV series Sherlock and Elementary are basically the same thing, right? Wrong! For one thing, Sherlock actually bases most of its work off of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Let's take a look at the characters in both series and compare them shall we?

Sherlock Holmes; Sherlock; Semi-long dark hair, defined facial features, talks rather fast, all-around strange individual
Sherlock Holmes; Elementary; Short almost invisible hair, rounded face and undefined features, talks slowly, normal man

John Watson; Sherlock; blonde hair, easily annoyed, doctor
Joan Watson; Elementary; female, Aisan, black hair, laughs at everything Sherlock does, nurse

Jim Moriarty; Sherlock; male
Jamie Moriarty; Elementary; female

Mrs. Hudson; Sherlock; old, sweet, personally something that I want to hug
Mrs . Hudson; Elementary; young-ish, obvious plastic surgery, all-around stiff amd hostile

Mycroft Holmes; Sherlock; older, dark hair
Mycroft Holmes; Elementary; looks younger than Sherlock; blonde

Mary Watson; Sherlock; blonde, young
Mary Watson; Elementary; Aisian, old

Irene Adler; Sherlock; short black hair
Irene Adler; Elementary; long blonde hair

Ya know what, BBC SHERLOCK FTW! I think the BBC did a better job at making the characters accurate.
(I still have no idea why they made John and Moriarty female >m>)

Because the producers didn't read the books

well, that's kind of an extreme assumption.
